Nick Walker of Edwardsville YMCA Named Illinois YMCA Program Director of the Year

Edwardsville, IL – September 30, 2025 – The Illinois State Alliance of YMCA’s awarded Nick Walker, Sports and Recreation Director at the Edwardsville YMCA, the Matt Ottaviano Award for Outstanding Program Director 2025. Walker was selected for his outstanding leadership, innovation, and commitment to advancing the YMCA mission through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Walker joined the Edwardsville YMCA in February 2024 and has quickly established himself as a transformational leader. Under his direction, sports participation at the Edwardsville YMCA has increased by 30 percent, primarily due to new initiatives that expand opportunities for youth and strengthen community partnerships.

One of Walker’s most notable achievements has been the development of the Junior Cougars basketball and volleyball leagues in partnership with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). This collaboration has not only elevated the visibility of YMCA programs, but also provided local youth with unique experiences such as mentorship from college athletes and the opportunity to play during halftime at SIUE games.

Walker has also been a driving force in creating adaptive sports programs for individuals with developmental and physical disabilities. These programs, which include basketball, soccer, football, hockey, and pickleball, offer inclusive opportunities that promote confidence, teamwork, and a sense of belonging for participants of all abilities.

In addition to his work at the branch level, Walker served on the committee that organized the first Illinois YMCA 2-Ball Tournament in collaboration with the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). His contributions have strengthened YMCA programming across the state and expanded opportunities for youth beyond the Edwardsville community.

“Nick’s ability to connect with participants and families, his innovative program development, and his commitment to inclusivity have had a tremendous impact in a very short time,” said Natasha Howard, Edwardsville YMCA Executive Director of Programs. “He is highly deserving of this honor, and we are proud to celebrate his accomplishments.”

Walker is known for his personal approach to leadership, often greeting children and families by name and ensuring that every participant feels recognized and supported. His collaborative spirit extends to his colleagues as well, as he readily assists with responsibilities outside his own role to support the greater Edwardsville YMCA team.

The Edwardsville YMCA congratulates Nick Walker on being named Illinois YMCA Program Director of the Year and looks forward to the continued positive impact of his leadership on the Edwardsville community and beyond.
